Selfishness. That’s the main thing the image reflects among others such as an attempt of freedom and power. One person against many. The innocents in the background are watching what is happening with the lady, named Ynet Nili, but no one is helping her. Perhaps because they don’t want to get hurt or they want her to solve their problems, they are so selfish just thinking on their own welfare. Has she won? Has she lost? Is it necessary to use the violence to change anything? Now think about it, do we want to live in this society, or we will do something to make a change? The photographs take this kind of pictures to seize a situation they want to show to the world.

THE POWERFUL YOUTH

Oded Balilty did a great job the 1st February 2006 taking this picture because it meant a change to the lady. She knew she wouldn’t win, but she stood up to her rights anyways. Looking at the woman’s facial expression, we can guess that she’s making an effort to handle all the police’s strength. She must be trying to defend the place where she and many people live. Amona, located in the east of the Palestinian city, became the home of all those people but only one of them bothered to defend it and prevent it from being taken away. The police is attempting to evict everyone from that place on direct orders from their superiors.
The young woman of 16 years old is wearing a long purple dress and a white dress above her that reaches a little below her knees. She is also wearing a green jacket above all these clothes that may cover her from the cold. On her feet, black dirty shoes that she might have been wearing for a long time. On the other hand, the police wear black suits and a helmet that might protect them against a fight with weapons. Their look in the face is similar to the woman’s one. They are attempting to stop the civilian, perhaps using much strength to make her fall. They may just want to fulfil the mission their superiors have ordered them to do and go back to their families. Yet, what they are doing to these people could happen to them and they would do everything to defend the place where they live, just as the young lady. Although in this case they have weapons to defend themselves, but the citizens don’t, and they could be silenced easily. In the background, many people are watching the conflict that is taking place. Perhaps they are cheering her or yelling that is not worth it. Whatever the innocents try to do to stop everyone from going against their rights, it always ends bad or even worse than how it was before. On the right, we see some smoke coming out from a building. It might have been provoked by the police to evict everyone because they had resisted.
However, it doesn’t seem to have had much effect on people since they don’t seem scared. Furthermore, the lady hadn’t won. There was a high number of police in comparison with her. They grabbed her by the hair and beat her. She must have felt a lot of pain, as did her family when they saw everything, but she also must have been proud for doing an act of kindness and that could possibly have changed everything. She didn’t stay with the doubt of what could have happened if she didn’t do it, she dared to defend herself and yes, she might not have made a big change, but she tried. She said that she would do it again just to defend her and everyone’s rights.
So, what is the point? Are we going to let them destroy us little by little, or we will do something even though there will be consequences? We have to stop them; we can’t let them get away with this. What the woman did was a very brave thing knowing that she was only 16. A girl our age tried to break the kind of society in which we live, faced the reality which many people try to ignore, provoking thus a miserable society. Ask yourself, would you confront this society? Would you try to make a change, or will you see how everything is becoming a battlefield? Many people have died to make a change on humankind minds, are you going to let them die in vain?
