ZOMBIE

THE CRANBERRIES

BY

WHY DID I CHOOSE IT?

Zombie is a protest song to stop the war because it affects everyone, especially innocent people. I chose this song because it caught me from the beginning and the meaning behind the scenes and every word of the song was awesome.

WHAT DOES IT TALK ABOUT?

The video describes the daily life of the areas under English control and it focuses on the Irish War for the Independence of England, which began in 1916. In the scenes we see the real British soldiers guarding the area, and the children playing a war game. The anguish of the lyrics is palpable, opening with “Another head hangs lowly / The child is taken slowly”. She also talked about the pain that the mothers must have felt from the losses, probably referring to the 1993 attack: “Another mother breaks / The heart is taking over”. There is a scene that shows a boy with a dog. He finds bloody bones in the street and starts biting them. This is a mystery due to the belonging of the bones: human or animal. This scene seems to me to be the metaphor of the song because it’s like a reference where humans devour each other without any sense, so I guess that’s why they named the song Zombie.

ORIGINS OF THE SONG

On 20 March 1993, two IRA (Irish Republican Army) bombs hidden in garbage containers in Cheshire, England, exploded in one minute. They killed Jonathan Bell, a three-year-old boy, and Tim Parry, a 12-year-old boy, but there were also dozens of wounded. Dolores O’Riordan, the singer of The Cranberries said she was watching the TV when one of the mothers showed up on the screen very upset due to the loss of her son. Hurting innocent people encouraged and inspired her to write the song, although she said she never planned on dealing with songs like this because she thought she would have problems.
