WHY DID I CHOOSE IT?

I used to watch a series which was about the army, but, in the end, when the soldiers died, they put this song and I cried a lot because I became closely to them after everything they went through. After a few months I decided to know more about the song and I discovered that his main inspiration for the song was his grandfather's experiences during World War I, and how war has changed him.

HOW HE CREATED THE SONG?

Mike Oldfield didn’t know him but he made extensive researches discovering that he was a cheerful and cordial young man but he returned from the trenches of the war completely transformed, all his children had many problems with him: “I'm nuclear, I'm wild, I'm breaking up inside, a heart of broken glass, defiled, deep inside, the abandoned child”. To better understand the psychology of his grandfather, Oldfield went to Ypres, a Belgian municipality in the province of West Flanders which during the First World War was the center of Battles of Ypres between German and Allied forces, and visited the cemetery of the regiment to which his grandfather had belonged, the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Nuclear is a 2014 pop-rock song by British musician Mike Oldfield that became closely associated with the Metal Gear fandom with the opening lyrics “standing on the edge” in particular.

WHAT DOES THE SONG TALKS ABOUT?

His main inspiration for the song was his grandfather's experiences during World War I, and how war has changed him.
